Thought of the week

How refreshing it was this past weekend to verge away from the superstars of our game and instead watch the best that our amateur game has to offer. The 45th Walker Cup between GB&I and USA saw records broken as the GB&I boys ran out comfortable winners, 16.5-9.5, the biggest winning margin for GB&I since the Walker Cup began in 1922.

Leading 10-6 going into the final day's singles matches, GB&I knew they only needed 3.5 points to secure victory and they did this in fine fashion. A few recognisable names from this year's Open Championship, Ashley Chesters and Paul Dunne, were influential in GB&I's winning team, whereas as Jordan Niebrugge, who finished sixth at The Open, had a miserable time at Royal Lytham & St Annes as the American lost all three of his matches. But the one golfer who stood out the most was Jimmy Mullen who became the first GB&I player to have a perfect 4-0 record since the likes of Paul Casey and Luke Donald back in 1999 - not bad company to be in!

Competition results

Thursday last week saw the Gents' Stableford take place with two golfers carding 38 points to tie at the top of the leaderboard. Taking top spot thanks to a better inward half was J Ingram ahead of J Grant in second. Four golfers followed with 37 points.

On Saturday, after a month of highly competitive individual medal competitions, the men paired up to compete for the SGU Greensomes Trophy. The forgiving format and fine weather contributed to some low scoring and in a photo finish, three teams tied on 67 with Mark McDonald and Bruce Grant taking the honours courtesy of an excellent inward half of 31. Following them was R Kinnaird and I Murray in second, with J Ingram and S Taylor third.

At Boat of Garten on Sunday it was Ladies Outing Day, this year to Hopeman GC on the Moray coast. 21 ladies enjoyed excellent hospitality from the host club and a fine day of golf. Winner of the team prize was Team MacPherson comprising of Cathy MacPherson, Cynthia Smith and Alison Fielding while in the individual competition Cynthia Smith, on 35 points, just pipped Ann Carter by virtue of a better last nine holes.

Club teams

On Thursday the Gents' Senior Section entertained Grantown Seniors and in a very friendly match. Boat emerged winners by four points to three.

The gents made the trip north for their annual match versus Royal Dornoch GC on Sunday and were unfortunate to lose narrowly by 4.5 points to 3.5. Boat GC would like to thank Royal Dornoch GC for their excellent hospitality and superbly presented course.
